Punjab Agricultural University Ludhiana came into existence during 1962. Until 1981, teaching and research in Agrometeorology discipline was carried out within the Department of Agronomy. However, based on recommendations of National Commission on Agriculture, an independent department of Agril. Meteorology was established during 1981-82 with assistance from ICAR.

The M.Sc. Programme initiated in 1979-80 while Ph.D programme was started in 1992-93 PAU was the first institution in the country to start these programme and to start short range weather forecast s and issuance of Agro advisories for farmers. A net work of automatic weather stations covering all five agroclimatic zones with central facility at Ludhiana has been established.

Research thrust in Agrometeorology include weather driven dynamic crop growth and yield simulation models for various crops, crop weather relationships, weather- crop-insects/diseases interactions,. Climatic changes and their effects on crop productivity, modifications to alleviate environmental stress, evapotranspiration and water requirements of important crops.

An excellent infrastructure has been created for teaching/ extension and research in agrometeorology viz. climatology, crop weather interactions, field microclimate modifications to alleviate environmental stresses, evapotranspiration and water requirements of crop, weather crop insect/disease interactions, crop growth simulation modelling and climate changes effects on crop production. These studies form the bases to formulate agro advisories to face aberrant weather conditions and advise on efficient farm management practices to farmers.

Brief Introduction

Dr Pavneet Kaur Kingra obtained M.Sc Agricultural Meteorology in 1996 and Ph.D Agricultural Meteorology in 2009 from Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) Ludhiana. She has been on the faculty of Agricultural Meteorology (Department of Climate Change and Agril. Meteorology, PAU) since 1999 and teaching various undergraduate and post-graduate courses in Agricultural Meteorology. She has guided 10 M.Sc. and 3 Ph.D. students as Major Advisor.

She has expertise in the field of Climate Change and its impacts on crop evapotranspiration and water productivity, Crop weather relations, Micrometeorology and Remote Sensing applications in Agriculture and Climate Change. She has authored more than 125 research papers, 5 books, 5 book chapters and seven practical manuals for various courses of Agricultural Meteorology along with many research reports, bulletins, booklets, pamphlets and popular articles. She has presented papers in several national/international symposia, seminars and conferences and attended several workshops.

She is life member of many professional societies such as Indian Society of Remote Sensing, Indian Meteorological Society, Association of Agrometeorologists, Indian Society of Agronomy, Indian Science Congress Association, Indian Society of Geoinformatics, Indian Society of Agricultural Physics, Indian Ecological Society, Punjab Academy of Sciences etc. She has handled different research projects funded by Department of Science & Technology, New Delhi and Ministry of Environment, Forests & Climate Change, Govt. of India.

  • Studies on agro-forestry / forestry aspects relevant to climate change.
  • Economic/socio-economic studies for evaluation of alternative strategies contemplated for combating impacts of climate change on agriculture and conservation of natural resources.
  • Evolve a logical operational framework for assessing risks of climate change, accounting for existing and future climatic uncertainties, and pertinent socio-economic and environmental risks for making policy/planning decisions.
