The Department of Farm Machinery and Power Engineering was established in 1974 after trifurcation of the erstwhile Department of Agricultural Engineering (established in 1965). The department was created to pursue excellence in teaching, research, industrial interaction and farmer's participatory on-farm research and development. The Resident Instruction Programme in Farm Machinery and Power comprises of undergraduate degree programme for the students of College of Agricultural Engineering & Technology, College of Agriculture,College of Horticulture and Forestry and college of Bsaic Science and Humanities. Post graduate programmers i.e. M.Tech and Ph.D. programmes are the flagship programmes of the department.
This centre is perhaps the only place in India pursuing an active research programme in design and development in Farm Machinery and Power spanning the broad areas of conservation agriculture, including straw management, sensor based agricultural machinery, human factors in design, tillage and traction, off-road vehicle design and testing. It was recognized as centre for advanced studies in Farm Machinery and Power during the IXth Plan by the ICAR (1997-2002). It has a well established and duly approved farm machinery testing centre to cater to needs of farm machinery manufacturing industry and has an active liaison with the industry in R&D. Institute has dedicated prototype production and manufacturer training centre (PPMTC) towards the advancement of knowledge to the users through continuous research. Recently the department has established tractor and combine diagnostic facility to provide hands-on training to the budding engineers and entrepreneurs in collaboration with New Holland Tractors and CLAAS Combines respectively, a unique venture in the country. Department since inception has granted 157 M.Tech. ( 5 pursuing presently) and 63 Ph.D. degrees. (2 pursuing presently) scholars apart from contributing its efforts in training nearly 2500 highly capable graduate engineers. It would be worthwhile to mention that during on campus recruitments, most of the graduate engineers from the college have got employment with tractor industry. Department has also developed more than four dozen technologies. Most of these technologies have been commercialized and are being extensively used by the farmers in the region. The Department has also trained more than two hundred fifty engineers and managers from the tractor industries, bankers, IAS probationers and international trainees from Afro-Asian countries. Departmental research hall has become important visiting site for visitors from all over the country and dignitaries from across the world.

Er. Shiva Bhambota (L-2014-AE-133-D), a PhD student of the department received senior research fellowship (SRF) from CSIR, New Delhi for two years (2017-2019). He worked on the project entitled “Development and evaluation of vertical disc type vegetable transplanter for cell type nursery” under the guidance of Dr. A K Dixit, Principal Scientist (FMPE). Er. Neeraj Kumar Singh (L-2017-AE-102-D), a PhD student of the department received senior research fellowship (SRF) from CSIR, New Delhi for two years (2019-2021). He worked on the project entitled “Design, Development and Evaluation of Paddy Transplanter for wash root type nursery” under the guidance of Dr. S S Thakur, Principal Scientist (FMPE).
3. PUNJAB AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY SIGNS MoA WITH PI FOUNDATION FOR LUCKY SEED DRILL
The Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) has inked a pact with PI Foundation, Gurgaon to manufacture and distribute the Lucky Seed Drill (machine fitted with automatic spraying attachment) based on technology developed by the university. The technology would help in natural resource conservation, especially water and the pact would benefit the underprivileged and marginal farmers by ensuring the adoption of the technology of direct seeded rice (DSR).
4. PAU INKS PACT FOR “PAU SUPER STRAW MANAGEMENT SYSTEM” TECHNOLOGY
The Punjab Agricultural University has entered into agreement with forty three industries for commercialization of “PAU Super SMS” Technology. PAU super SMS is a unique attachment for combine harvesters which cuts, chops and uniformly spreads loose straw coming out of the harvester during harvesting of paddy. The machine will facilitate the operations of other in situ straw management machinery like happy seeder, spatial no till drill mould board plough etc, which will ultimately stop the burning of paddy straw and help farmers enhance soil productivity with in situ paddy straw management.
5. PAU INKS PACT FOR COMMERCIALIZATION OF 'PAU CUTTER CUM SPREADER' TECHNOLOGY
The Punjab Agricultural University has entered into agreement with two industries namely Thind Mechanical Works, Amritsar and Amrik Agricultural Industries, Batala, for commercialization of “PAU Cutter cum Spreader” technology. The “PAU Cutter cum Spreader” is low cost and practically applicable technology for cutting, chopping and uniform spreading of paddy straw in combine harvested paddy fields. The machine has low running cost and can be operated with 35 to 40 HP tractors with capacity of 2 acres per hour. The machine will facilitate the operations of other insitu straw management machinery like “PAU Happy Seeder”, Mould Board Plough etc, which will ultimately halt paddy straw burning and help farmers to enhance soil productivity with in-situ paddy straw management.
6. PUNJAB AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY SIGNS MoA FOR PAU SAMRT SEEDER TECHNOLOGY
The Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) has inked a pact with Ten manufacturers for PAU Smart seeder Technolgy. This machine is developed by the university. PAU smart seeder manages the paddy residue by incorporation & surface mulching and thus, smartly retains the benefits of both Happy Seeder and Super Seeder in a single machine. PAU Smart Seeder places wheat seeds in a well-tilled narrow band of soil and covers the seed rows with soil, using furrow closing rollers. This machine can be operated with a 45 to 50 hp tractor. The field capacity and fuel consumption of the machine is 0.4 ha/h and 5.5 l/acre, respectively.
