The Department of Economics and Sociology was founded in 1962. In the discipline of Economics, three thrust areas of research and teaching at the graduate and post graduate levels include
- Farm management and production economics
- Agricultural marketing and price policy
- Agricultural finance and cooperation
The specialization in case of Sociology include
- Rural sociology
- Social Change
The department offers M.Sc. and Ph.D. programmes in Agricultural Economics with specialization in Farm Management, Agricultural Marketing and Agricultural Finance. The department also offers M.Sc. and Ph.D. programmes in case of Sociology.
The department has a highly competent faculty of national and international repute. Highly eminent positions at the state, national and international levels have been occupied by its faculty members: Dr A S Kahlon, Dr S S Johl, Dr D S Sidhu, Dr Ramesh Chand and Dr Sukhpal Singh are a few to name.
The department established the Indian Society for Agricultural Development and Policy (ISADP) during the year 1990. The society publish the Journal of Agricultural Development and Policy (JADP) biannually. The stalwarts in the field of Agricultural Economics Drs S.S. Grewal, Karam Singh, Joginder Singh, A.S. Joshi, R.S. Sidhu, M.S. Sidhu, Sukhpal Singh and Kamal Vatta have been the ex-officio presidents of the society. For more information click here

Brief Introduction
Dr. Jitender Mohan Singh joined as Head, Department of Economics and Sociology, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana on April 13, 2023. He is also working as Director, Agro-Economic Research Centre, Department of Economics & Sociology, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana since January 2020. His research area is Farm Management and Agricultural Marketing. He started his career as District Extension Specialist (Farm Management) and later worked as Deputy Director (Tr.), Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Fathegarh Sahib.
His major research work emphasized on investigating the economic aspects of different oilseed crops, supply chain of horticultural commodities, labour migration, resource use planning for sustainable agriculture and subsidiary occupations of farming. As Director, AERC he has written twenty-two research reports and submitted to the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare, Govt. of India and other funding agencies on various topical issues related to agriculture. Besides this, he acted as principal investigator (PI) in one and co-principal investigator (Co-PI) in four projects funded by reputed funding agencies. He has published about eighty research papers in various journals of repute and thirty-five extension articles in various magazines/newspapers. He made presentations in about forty ‘Research and Extension Specialist Workshops’ organised by the Punjab Agricultural University. He also delivered numerous Radio/TV talks for benefit of the farming community. Presently, he is guiding one Ph.D. and two M.Sc. students, while fifteen postgraduate (M.Sc./Ph.D.) students have completed their degree under his supervision. Dr. Singh presented papers in various conferences held in the country. He is associated with many professional societies and held various offices in these societies.

- The department provides the data regarding Cost of Cultivation (COC) of the principal crops viz. wheat, paddy and cotton to the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India. This information is used by the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices and the Government in the fixation of Minimum Support Price (MSP) of these crops every year.
- The department provides feedback regarding various policy issues related with agricultural development to the State Government and Government of India from time to time.
