The Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Physics came in to existence in the year 1964-65. Dr K C Chanda was the founder head of the department. A full-fledged Department of Physics came into existence in the year 1972 with Dr. S P Puri as the founder head of the department. The department offered Masters degrees in Statistics, Physics and Ph.D in Statistics. The Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Physics were again merged in 2001, in the process of reorganization of the university departments renaming it as Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Physics.
The present faculty strength is 11 that comprise of 4 Professors/equivalent, 7 Assistant Prof. /Equivalent. Besides teaching, the faculty of the department is actively engaged in research in the following areas:

Brief Introduction
Dr Mohammed Javed, Professor (Statistics) has been appointed as Head of Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Physics on March 20, 2023. He completed his B.Sc. from Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh in the year 1989, M.Sc. (Statistics) in 1992 and Ph.D. (Statistics) in 1996 from Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana. He was a Merit Fellowship holder in M.Sc. for securing highest OGPA. He joined PAU as Assistant Professor (Statistics) in Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Physics in the year 2001. He has handled UGC sponsored one major research project as Co-PI. He has acted as Coordinator/Assistant Coordinator of number of recruitment examinations conducted by PAU, Ludhiana. He has also acted as Assistant Coordinator (Results) of UG and PG entrance tests of PAU, Ludhiana from 2008 to date. He is In-charge, Computer Centre, College of Basic Sciences and Humanities (COBS&H) from 2015 to date. He has been Member, Executive Committee of PAU Science Club, Society for the Advancement of Academics, Sports and Cultural Activities (SAASCA) of COBS&H and Association of Basic Sciences and Humanities Alumni (ABHA). His research area is sample survey and mainly focuses on Randomized Response Technique (RRT). He has published 62 research papers in different journals of national and international repute. He is life member of various professional societies. He has written four practical manuals for UG and PG students. He has guided more than 150 M.Sc. and Ph.D. students as member advisory committee. In addition he is Nominee of Dean, Post Graduate Studies for School of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, College of Agricultural Engineering and Technology (COAE&T) and Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Physics, COBS&H, PAU, Ludhiana. He has delivered number of invited lectures in Trainings / Summer / Winter Schools etc.

This software has been procured under the NAIP Consortium on Strengthening Statistical Computing for NARS.(www.iasri.res.in/sscnars)
