The Department of Apparel and Textile Science, College of Community Science, PAU, Ludhiana came into existence in 1978. The Department has the privilege of being the first Department of Apparel and Textile Science of SAU to start M Sc Programme in 1978, Ph D programme in 1998 and B.Sc (Hons) Fashion Designing in 2008. Since then, the Department has created a vast pool of knowledge, developed strong linkages with local industry and trained man power that is catering to the needs of the discipline in this region. The department offers B Sc (Hons) elective in Apparel and Textile Science to the final year students for four years BSc degree in Community Science, two years degree in MSc and three years degree in PhD degrees. Apart from this it also ran a four years degree in BSc Fashion Designing (Hons) and two years MSc in Fashion Designing under Self Funding Programme from 2008 to 2021. The Department has also initiated an Experiential Learning Unit in Apparel Production from 2012 for imparting hands on training to students in production and management for successfully running an enterprise.

Brief Introduction
Dr (Mrs) Harminder Kaur Saini joined as Head Department of Apparel and Textile Science, College of Community Science, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana on October 12, 2023. She did her B.Sc. Home Science (1987), M.Sc. Clothing and Textiles (1991) and PhD. in Clothing and Textiles (2008) from College of Home Science, PAU, Ludhiana. She began her academic career as an Assistant Professor of Clothing and Textiles at College of Home Science Kaoni in October 1992 and shifted to College of Home Science at Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana in June, 1998 and later promoted as Professor, in October, 2010.
She has contributed significantly in the field of teaching, research and extension in last 31 years. She has been adjudged best teacher by the alumni of the college for the year 2001.Throughout her distinguished career, Dr Saini has taught UG and PG courses and involved in formulation & revision of UG and PG courses for Community Science and Fashion Designing. As a class incharge and advisor conducted 5 educational tours for BSc (Hons) Community Science and BSc (Hons) Fashion Designing students. She has been actively involved in establishment of Experiential Learning unit of the department and presently incharge of the unit. She has guided 12 M.Sc. and 5 PhD students. Her research areas included Apparel manufacturing and Designing, Textile crafts and development of union fabrics. She has handled 2 adhoc projects funded by DST and UGC. She has to her credit 54 research papers, 40 lectures cum demonstrations during trainings and 15 popular articles. She has organized and conducted more than 20 short courses/trainings. She has attended 35 conferences and workshops and has presented 17 research papers in national and international conferences. She has also acted as paper setter, evaluator, subject matter expert and member of the Board of Studies for various Universities. Presently holding the charge of Coordinator of External Examination at college level. Also actively involved in co-curricular activities of the students and remained DDMC president for one session and incharge music activities for more than 15 years. Under her guidance students won five times overall trophy in Music in Inter College and inter university North Zone Youth Festivals. She has remained an active member of various committees at University, College and Departmental levels.

- Dr. Neelam Grewal was appointed as Dean, College of Home Science in 2007 and Dean Post Graduate Studies, PAU in 2015.
- Dr. Neelam Grewal was appointed as Director, CIWA (Central Institute for Women in Agriculture), Bhubaneswar in 2013 and Member, PPSC (Punjab Public Service Commission), Patiala in 2018.
- Dr. Sandeep Bains was appointed as Dean, College of Home Science in 2019 and charge of Dean Post Graduate Studies, PAU in 2021.
- Award of Honour for Development of Protective Clothing for Women in Agriculture - AICRP on Home Science, CT Unit, presented at Global conference on Women in Agriculture held on 13th -15th March 2012, IARI, New Delhi.
- Choudhary Devi Lal All India Coordinated Research Project Award, 2003 in recognition of outstanding performance of the cooperating centers of AICRP on Home Science in terms of linkages, research output, impact and sense of partnership.
- Pavan M and Dr. Surabhi Mahajan bagged IInd prize for Best Poster Presentation for the paper entitled 'Green Composites: Sustainable Materials for future era' in 4th International Conference on ‘Global Efforts on Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Food Security’ held from September 17-19, 2022 at Institute of Forestry, Tribhuvan University, Pokhara Campus, Nepal.
- Manjot Kaur and Dr. Surabhi Mahajan won IIIrd prize in Poster presentation on ‘Development of value added utility products from reutilization of old neckties’ in 58th Joint Technological Conference held on February 15-16, 2019 organized by North India Textile Research Association (NITRA), Ghaziabad.
- Dr Surabhi Mahajan is appointed as Assistant Coordinator of Internal Quality Assurance Cell of the University on July 19, 2023 by the Worthy Vice Chancellor, PAU, Ludhiana.
