The Department of Biochemistry was established in 1965 as Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. Initially, the thrust was to enhance the awareness of masses about the use of quality foods, through short courses, lectures and film shows in Applied Human Nutrition Programme and was then modified to suit the future teaching and research priorities. Strong research groups were established to work on research projects on carbohydrates, lipids, protein and polyphenols, and infrastructure for teaching and research in Biochemistry was created. The department was separated from Chemistry in 1971. The department has well-qualified faculty with a basic background in agriculture and basic sciences. Currently, the department offers both M.Sc. and Ph.D. programmes in Biochemistry. The department is also offering undergraduate courses to the B.Sc. students of the College of Agriculture, Horticulture, and Community Science.
So far, more than 817 M.Sc. and 180 Ph.D. students have been awarded degrees and are working in different areas ranging from academics and administration to defense services. Many of them are holding coveted positions both in India and abroad and brought laurels to this Department. The faculty has bagged prestigious awards and recognitions like the Academic Staff Commonwealth Fellowship (UK), German Academic Exchange Fellowship (DAAD, Germany), Fellowships of Indian National Science Academy (FNA), National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS), M I Biol (London), International Scientific Exchange Award, Canada, Nestle Food Scientist Award. The Department has Local Chapters of Society of Biological Chemists of India, Bangalore and Society of Agricultural Biochemists, Kanpur. These societies and Alumni Association of the department holds lectures of eminent scientists and symposiums for scientific discussion among the scientists and students.
The Departmental Library caters to the needs of students as well as the teachers. The department has published about 1600 research papers in journals of National and International repute besides publishing books.
The Department has State of the Art Molecular Biology Laboratory equipped with sophisticated instruments like UV visible, spectrophotometer, 2-D Electrophoresis, HPLC, Ultracentrifuge, Gel Documentation System, PCR, Biophotometer, Deep freezer, Chlorophyll Fluorescence Meter, Lyophilizer, Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer, tissue culture lab, and Hybridization Oven to work on the biochemical and molecular aspects of tolerance to various types of abiotic and biotic stresses.

Brief Introduction
Dr Manjeet Kaur Sangha, Principal Biochemist in Department of Biochemistry has been appointed as regular Head of Department of Biochemistry on Dec 22, 2022. She completed her B.Sc. from M.C.M.D.A.V College Chandigarh in the year 1986, M.Sc. (1988) and Ph.D. (1994) from PGIMER, Chandigarh. She secured 5th position in B.Sc in Panjab University and is medal holder in M.Sc. She cleared Joint CSIR-UGC NET Masters level in 1989 and ASRB NET for lecturership/Assistant Professorship in Biochemistry in Oct.1995 for SAUs. She joined PAU as Assistant Biochemist in Department of Biochemistry in the year 1998. She has handled two research projects as Principle Investigator (DBT and UGC) and was also the Coordinator of Examination of College of Basic Sciences and Humanities, Punjab Agricultural University (2.5 years). Her research focus involved Botrytis cinerea and chickpea interaction, quality evaluation of ACRIP and Institute samples of Brassica species for oil content, fatty acid profile and glucosinlates, characterisaton of lectins from cultivated and wild Brassicas and their potential against mustard aphid, screening and biochemical evaluation of salinity tolerance in cotton, role of purified RIPs against CLCuD and fungal pathogens of cotton, extensive biochemical characterization of 166 genotypes of okra, cold tolerance in bitter gourd, biochemical characterization of celery, biochemical characterization of YVMV and bittergourd interaction, characterization of bittergourd germplasm for bioactives in fruits and role of charantin, momordicine I and II, vicine and soluble dietary fibre for their antidiabetic potential in rats, and characterisation of heat stress in cotton in terms of biochemicals and lipidomics. She has published 51 research papers, one book, three reviews in different journals. She also has three book chapters to her credit. She has taught thirteen UG and twelve PG courses to students of Biochemistry Department and other departments of College Basic Sciences and Humanities and also to students of College of Agriculture, College of Community Science and College of Horticulture and Forestry of PAU. She has guided 20 M. Sc. and 5 Ph. D. students. In addition she was the Convener of Fine Arts activities of the College of Basic Sciences and Humanities and has motivated students to participate in rangoli, painting, poster making, collage making, and clay modelling. Three of her students are Assistant Professors in different institutes. She has delivered invited lectures in many CAFT trainings of PAU and has been invited as subject expert for selection of candidates in various projects of GADVASU.

- Ms Manpreet Kaur, (Admission No. L-2018-BS-74-D), PhD student of Department of Biochemistry was invited as a short term scholar for six months in the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, USA. She did her research on the stability of food lipids in the lab of Dr. Eric A. Decker, Head, Department of Food Science, University of Massachusetts. Dr. Decker is actively conducting research to characterize mechanisms of lipid oxidative and health implications of bioactive lipids.
- Manpreet Kaur is working under the Prime Minister Research Fellowship (initiative of FICCI and SERB) in collaboration with Industry partner 'Chemical Resourses, Panchkula' on the topic "Biochemical Characterization of Euryhaline Microalgal Strains for Bioactive Metabolites" under guidance of Dr. Surekha Bhatia, Senior Biochemist, Department of Processing and Food Engineering.
- Heena Rani (L-2018-BS-75-D), a Ph.D. student in the Department of Biochemistry ha been awarded with India’s Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB) Overseas Visiting Doctoral Fellowship Program (OVDF) at Purdue University, USA. She joined Professor Szymanski’s lab in the Dept. of Botany and Plant Pathology since 26th July, 2021 and worked on Malt quality and thermostability studies in mutants, hulled, hull-less and wild genotypes of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.). At Purdue University, she used Shotgun Proteomics approach to decipher differentially expressed proteins in barley during malting. After her Ph.D., she bagged the “Postdoctoral Research Associate Position” at U.S. Department of Agriculture, Madison, Wisconsin.
- Ms. Gurkanwal Kaur Sekhon, a Ph.D. student in the Department of Biochemistry, ha been awarded with the prestigious Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Young Research Fellowship for the year 2020-21. She is currently working on “Process Optimization of Conversion of Paddy Straw into Ethanol and Xylitol” under the guidance of Dr Monica Sachdeva Taggar, Biochemist, School of Energy studies. This research work is being carried out in the Pathak Energy Laboratories, Department of Renewable Energy Engineering, PAU. Her research work is focused on the utilization of lignocellulosic agricultural residue: paddy straw for the production of biofuels and other value added products.
- Diksha Singla (L-2012-BS-44-IM) was awarded Avtar Singh Atwal Gold Medal in 2021 for the year 2017-2018.
- Many students are pursuing their higher studies abroad. Ananya Chiraya is doing masters in Biochemistry at University of Saskatchewan. Sonali Koundal, another student of Integrated MSc (Hons) programme is pursuing Ph.D in Agricultural Sciences with a fellowship at Western Sydney University, Australia. Avninder received Research Assistantship at University of Texas Rio Grande Valley USA. Harshdeep Kaur is also pursuing higher studies in UK.
