PAU ISSUES ADVISORY FOR TREE GROWERS TO PROTECT PLANTATIONS FROM DROUGHT AND FROST
17-12-2024
The Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) has issued an advisory for tree growers in the state to protect their plantations and nurseries from the adverse effects of ongoing drought-like conditions and low temperatures.
According to Dr Baljit Singh, Principal Scientist (Soil Conservation), Department of Forestry and Natural Resources, the lack of rainfall and persistent low temperatures have posed significant risks to tree plantations, particularly species like neem, which suffered damage under similar conditions last year.
To mitigate these challenges, Dr Singh advised tree growers to apply light irrigation to tree nurseries and plantations to safeguard them from drought stress and take measures to protect plantations from frost damage, as young plants are especially vulnerable to low temperatures.
This proactive step is essential to ensuring tree survival and healthy growth during this critical period. PAU continues to support farmers and tree growers with expert guidance and solutions to address the region's climatic challenges affecting agriculture and forestry.
For further assistance, growers are encouraged to contact the Department of Forestry and Natural Resources, PAU, Ludhiana.
