PUNJAB NAUJAWAN KISAN SANSTHA (PNKS) MEETING HELD AT PAU-FASC TARN TARAN TO ADDRESS RABICROP CHALLENGES

A meeting of the Punjab Naujawan Kisan Sanstha (PNKS) was held at the PAU- Farm Advisory Service Centre (FASC), Tarn Taran, where over 80 young farmers gathered to discuss field challenges in rabi crops and explore ways to enhance their involvement in PAU-FASC extension activities.

Dr Parvinder Singh, in charge of FASC, Tarn Taran, emphasized the pivotal role of PNKS members in adopting and disseminating PAU technologies. He also shared insights into managing winter vegetables and techniques for raising summer vegetables in the off-season to boost yields and income.

Dr Prabhjeet Singh, Deputy Director (Training), KVK, Booh, Tarn Taran, encouraged participants to consult KVK scientists for updates on dairy, poultry, goat, and piggery farming. He highlighted the importance of adopting subsidiary occupations such as fishery, beekeeping, and mushroom cultivation to diversify income sources.

Dr Vivek Sharma, Soil Chemist, PAU, Ludhiana, explained the crucial role of micronutrients in enhancing rabi crop productivity. He noted that while macronutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium are vital, micronutrients are equally important for optimal crop growth.

Dr Parminder Kaur, SES (Plant Pathology), addressed the prevalence of pests and diseases affecting rabi crops, including pink stem borer, armyworm, aphids, yellow rust, and Karnal bunt in wheat. She emphasized the judicious use of agrochemicals for effective pest and disease management.

Dr Parminder Singh Sandhu, DES (Agronomy), discussed integrated weed management strategies and stressed the importance of proper fertilizer use, including correct dosages and application methods. He cautioned against over-fertilization, which could harm the environment and reduce farm profitability.

The meeting concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Dr Parminder Kaur, highlighting the collaborative efforts to resolve field issues and improve farming practices.
